4. Clasping roots.

Clasping roots grow from the nodes of the soft stem to cling on to other plants.

Example: Pepper and ivy

3. Aerial roots hang down from the stem into the air.

They can absorb water from the air.

They are also used to hold on to thier support or climb onto the other plants.

Example : Orchid and Ficus.

2. Buttress roots

Some tall trees grow protruding, plank-like roots at the base to give them extra support.

Example :Gossampinus, casuarina, flame of the forest and rubber tree.

Prop Roots:

They grow from the stem to the ground.

They give extra support to the plants.

Example: Ficus , maize, mangrove, and pandanus.

Modiefied Roots (METAMORPHIC ROOTS)

Modified roots are roots which change their structures to adapt to thier environment,

There are eight types of metamorphic roots.

Fibrous root system.

• It is highly branched with no root.


• The diameters of the roots do not increase with time.


• They can grow in the top part of the soil.


• Most monocotyledonous plants such as onions, maize, grass, garlic and so on, have fibrous root system.

• Normally, roots are the underground parts of plants.

• They do not have nodes, scales , leaves or buds.

• The root is formed from the radicle of the seed into the taproot.

• The tap root later branches out into the lateral roots, fine root and roots hair

• Normal root is usual root that grows downwords into the soil and is formed from the radicle.

• Adventitous root is root that grows from unusual location , like nodes or leaf margins.
